Removing Red Wine Stains: The Pro Secret

We've all been there — a relaxed evening, a glass of Pinot Noir, and suddenly a deep red splash across your pristine carpet. The key is acting fast, but not frantically.

Step 1: Blot, Don't Rub. Grab a clean white cloth and gently blot from the outside of the stain inward. Rubbing spreads the wine deeper into the fibers and can damage the carpet texture.

Step 2: Cold Water Dilution. Pour a small amount of cold water directly onto the stain. This dilutes the wine concentration and makes it easier to lift. Blot again with a fresh cloth.

Step 3: The Salt Trick. While the area is still damp, pour a generous layer of table salt over the stain. The salt crystals absorb the wine from the carpet fibers. Leave it for at least 30 minutes — overnight is even better.

Step 4: Vacuum and Assess. Vacuum up the dried salt. In many cases, the stain will be significantly lighter or completely gone. For stubborn stains, a solution of one part white vinegar to two parts water can be applied.

When to Call the Pros: If the stain has dried or if you're dealing with a valuable wool or silk carpet, professional extraction is the safest option. Our Number One stain removal solution is specifically formulated for organic stains like wine, coffee, and berry juice.

Prevention tip: Consider applying a carpet protector treatment after your next professional clean. This creates an invisible barrier that gives you more time to react to spills before they become stains.
